Page Titles
One of the first things seen
Page titles are one of the first things seen by searchers and the search engines. They are the first effort made to communicate the content of the website. And they must be a lead that is good enough to entice a search engine user to click on your website.
New business? Focus on the product
If you have built a website for a relatively new business, then focus on the elements that your potential customer is looking for, the goods or services. If no one knows the name of your business, then they are not going to type in into the search engines. So if you're promoting fitness shoes, list a different genre of shoe in each page title and put some text about that genre.
Established business? Focus on the company name
If you are managing a website for an established business, then there is a good possibility that some searchers will type in your company name when they are looking for your business online. In such a case the company name should be the first thing the person using the search engine sees. It lets them know that they have found the website they are looking for. In the case of out shoe company the title of one of the pages could read: "Fitness Shoes Fit, Inc. - Shoes for the marathon runner."
In either case vary the titles.
On some websites you will see the same page titles on all of their pages. The search engines do not give any brownie points for this. In fact, they are more likely to see this as a slack effort on the part of the webmaster to communicate the message to the user.
Vary the titles on various pages. Include the company name and then a little text relaying the content of the page to the search engine user.
